I have never been hugely into fitness or exercise, and since getting my diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis my exercise has had to take a back seat just so my muscles can cope with normal everyday life.

My sister, aka the Ying to my Yang, is the complete opposite!  You could not get more different people if you tried – and we came from the same parents, same upbringing & everything else you could possible think about.  Perhaps this is why she is my best friend, & nearly always the first person I turn to for anything (besides husband!).  There is also 10 years between us, so you would think that that would cause issues, but when we are together my heart swells with joy & it makes me so happy.  I am so proud to be her sister.

Kate lived in the UK for a couple of years, & that was TOUGH.  She was far away from family, but whilst she was there she discovered her true passion – helping others through exercise & living a healthy lifestyle.  She qualified as a personal trainer, & then came across Metafit & her life literally changed (for the better).  She decided to buy the franchise for South Africa & bring it over to help expand what personal trainers are able to teach as well as improving the lives of so many.


When she moved back to SA, I decided to tag along to some of her classes where she was training Personal Trainers & I was blown away!  This is intense!  But everyone who took part in Kate’s classes just loved them & wanted more.  That’s when it really hit me how special this was, & what a great teacher she is.

Formed by a former Royal Marine Commando and an international gymnast in 2010, Metafit is the original group X HIIT workout. 30 minute, non choreographed, bodyweight only workouts that set the metabolism on fire. We have been creating true HIIT workouts for our coaches for over 10 years and weather you are teaching a Boot Camp, Studio class or a PT session, Metafit works! its tough, but its meant to be.

I asked her a few questions about what made this HIIT workout different to the other ones that she had been teaching, & why it had such an impact on her.


Your name:  Kate Couchman

Some interesting/fun facts about you:  I started playing golf last month to help bring balance to my sporting life

Your business name:  Metafit South Africa

When did you start:  About 4 years ago but brought it to SA this year.

What did you do before this:  I was a Personal Trainer previously & endurance athlete (cycling, running & triathlons, predominantly).  I am also a qualified Homeopath & have always had an interest in living a healthy life.

What do you love most about having your own business:  I love being able to do something I truly love & the fact that I’m helping others to improve their business and impact on so many other peoples lives. My hours are flexible but because I’m doing something I love, I work more hours than normal

What have been some of your biggest battles with running your own business:  Trying to spread the word & get people to understand why we are different from any other HIIT course. I’m amazed at how few people respond when you contact them!

What is your main objective for your business:  To improve people’s lives through better health & fitness

Kate travels around South Africa training coaches, & seeing how much everyone has enjoyed these classes has really inspired me!  I know that as soon as I am strong enough I will most definitely be taking a Metafit class.  Kate has such passion for this HIIT workout & it shows in every one of her classes, as well as when she is teaching others.
